(Corrects source of report in intro)LONDON (Thomson Financial) - US and Canadian regulators have placed unusually tight restrictions on hundreds of older Bombardier Inc jets, citing 'serious and persistent safety problems', the Wall Street Journal reported. The newspaper said there have been increasingly frequent instances of flaps on jets operating improperly or becoming stuck. The flaps, situated at the back of the wing, provide additional lift during take-offs.The Wall Street Journal said the issue had prompted safety mandates for the CRJ 100, 200 and 440 jets.It said the problem had not caused any fatal accidents and that the restrictions apply to about 680 planes in the US and at least 300 elsewhere.tf.TFN-Europe_newsdesk@thomson.comwjCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
