BISHKEK (AFX) - Kyrgyzstan's parliament today overwhelmingly approved President Kurmanbek Bakiyev's latest nominee for prime minister, signalling an end to three months of political paralysis in the Central Asian country.Azim Isabekov, a relative political newcomer who is seen as a compromise figure, was approved by 57 lawmakers in the 75-seat parliament, which has only one chamber. Four voted against him.The approval came after parliament twice rejected Bakiyev's first choice, the previous prime minister Felix Kulov, pushing the country to the edge of a major crisis. This mountainous republic is considered the most democratic of the ex-Soviet Central Asian states. But it has struggled to establish stability since a March 2005 uprising that ousted the previous president Askar Akayev.Located between China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan hosts Russian and US forces at separate military bases, a source of tension between Bishkek and the country's Soviet-era master Moscow.Speaking in parliament Isabekov, 46, stressed his technocratic credentials and voiced hopes for a new spirit of cooperation between parliament and the president.'My election signifies the consolidation of all the institutions of state. The members of parliament have also shown their support for the president,' Isabekov said.'Today or tomorrow I will present the new composition of the government to parliament and I will work for the growth of our economy,' he said.newsdesk@afxnews.comafp/ambCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
