BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - The National Development and Reform Committee (NDRC) said the country plans to shut down its small power generators with total capacity of 50 mln KW before 2010, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.Small power generators are those with a capacity of smaller than 100,000 KW. They currently represent nearly one-third of the nation's power generation capacity, Xinhua said.Zhao Xiaoping, director of the power industries department of the NDRC, said the power generation industry is the main target area of the country's energy-saving and pollution reduction programs, according to the report.'By shutting down these inefficient generators we will save 50 mln tons of coals and reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by 1.6 mln tons,' Zhao was quoted as saying.China missed its targets for energy-saving and pollution reduction in 2006, the report added.jianbo.wu@xfn.com
