NEW YORK (AFX) - Technology companies in Silicon Valley added more than 30,000 jobs in 2006 as a strengthening economy and venture capital investments propelled growth in the region.The Silicon Valley Index, a report prepared by Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, said employment growth in Silicon Valley was broad-based, spanning most sectors of the economy. Average pay showed a 'substantial' increase, Joint Venture said.Russell Hancock, Joint Venture's chief executive, said Silicon Valley is in 'a new phase in its dynamic evolution,' as venture capital money fuels new areas such as renewable energy and clean technology, as well as new forms of media.Venture capital investors poured $300 million into alternative energy in the area, the report said, with more than a quarter of U.S. venture capital investment funnelling into Silicon Valley.The full report will be released at the annual State of the Valley conference Feb. 2.
