NEW YORK (AP) - Semiconductor stocks rose Monday, but at least one analyst was urging caution across the sector.

American Technology Research analyst Doug Freedman warned in a note to investors of 'a growing concern' in the semiconductor sector about 2008 first quarter inventory builds and seasonality.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Sector index rose 5.4 points to 457.35 in early afternoon trading.

American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu said in a note to investors that Atheros, which reports earnings on Monday, was on track to at least meet consensus profit estimates of 26 cents a share on revenue of $106 million.

He said there were 'overblown and misplaced' concerns about competition for Atheros, which makes groups of chips that combine radio, amplifiers and other equipment for wireless networking.

'The bigger picture is that Atheros has been able to garner significant design wins over the past couple of years,' Wu said.

Atheros shares rose 98 cents, or 3.5 percent, to $29.42 in early afternoon trading.

Nvidia Corp. shares fell $1.03, or 3 percent to $33.40 in early afternoon trading.

Shares of National Semiconductor Corp. rose 67 cents or 3 percent, partly on new export rules that allow it easier access to the Chinese market.
