SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The state Mining and Minerals Division has issued a permit to an Arizona company to conduct exploration drilling for uranium resources on state trust land in McKinley County.Neutron Energy Inc. plans to drill five holes at a site near the Ambrosia Lake mining district north of Milan. The Mining and Minerals Division announced Wednesday that it reviewed Neutron Energy's application, which included field inspections and consultations with the state Environment Department, Department of Game and Fish and Department of Cultural Affairs. As part of the permit, the company must plug all drill holes and reclaim disturbed areas once the work is completed.'All permits issued by our agency are strictly monitored throughout the operation to ensure that exploration is conducted in a manner that will protect human health and safety, as well as New Mexico's environment,' said division director Bill Brancard. This is the third uranium exploration permit issued by the division in the past year. The other two permits were issued to Western Energy Development Corp. and Laramide Resources for projects in the La Jara Mesa area north of Grants.Cibola and McKinley counties have passed resolutions supporting uranium mining, pointing to its potential to create jobs, but American Indian tribes and environmental groups have urged the state not to grant uranium permits for the area.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
