BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - The United States Embassy is warning that leftist rebels may be targeting Americans at a popular resort town as the rest of Colombia prepares for a three-day weekend.A message from the embassy's warden, dated June 28, said the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, may be preparing an unspecified plan against U.S. citizens in Melgar, 45 miles southwest of Bogota.'The Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens avoid travel to Melgar until further notice,' said the warning on its Web site. 'For U.S. citizens already in Melgar, the Embassy urges them to maintain a low profile and to avoid restaurants, bars and other public places until further notice.'The embassy did not explain how it obtained the information.Melgar will be flooded with visitors this weekend as people escape the drizzle and cold of the capital for the sun and parties of Melgar.Melgar also houses a base where U.S. advisers help train Colombian police to tackle the world's largest cocaine industry.Increasing numbers of tourists are visiting Colombia, but the U.S. State Department maintains a standing warning on travel to Colombia, saying 'violence by narcoterrorist groups and other criminals continues to affect all parts of the country, urban and rural.'Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
