LONDON: A handwritten sheet containing the lyric of "All You Need is Love" which Beatle John Lennon used for his singing in the final Beatles' 1967 television appearance, fetched 600,000 pounds at an auction at London's Hippodrome nightclub Thursday. The bidder's identity has not been disclosed.
Lennon had scribbled the song's lyrics on the sheet and in a film footage of the programme, he could be seen dropping it to the floor after the song, said auctioneers Cooper Owen's spokesperson. A girl working for BBC had retrieved it and she had certified its authenticity at the auction.
The sheet was part of a pop memorabilia including clothes, paintings and musical instruments of Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and others, which went on sale.
Ted Owen, director of Cooper Owen, said the price topped an earlier record for a Beatles lyric of 250,000 pounds for "Nowhere Man" set in 2003.
The other items on sale were a military tunic worn by Lennon and associated with the famous "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", which got 100,000 pounds and his round spectacles, which fetched 55,000 pounds. His piano at his New York apartment and the water colours he used when he was 11, too were sold.
The items were gathered over 25 years by an anonymous American collector, described as an ardent Beatles follower. The four-hour auction saw as many as 250 bidders vying for the Lennon memorabilia. Lennon, who was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England, was killed outside his New York apartment in 1980.
This is Cooper Owen's first sale after the company, formerly selling music and film collectibles, was bought by John Collins, a Ferrari dealer.
