LONDON: There is a proposal to cut the government's 12-billion-pound hospital building programme for the National Health Service under the Private Finance Initiative is likely by as much as 40 per cent, according to newspaper reports.
The government has mooted PFI as a scheme by private contractors to build a school or hospital and lease it back to the state.
The reports indicated that there is going to be reappraisal of PFI hospitals and this may affect some 40 schemes. The proposed cuts may result in the reduction in the size of the projects, but the projects as such may not be abandoned, the reports said.
The reports said quoting the government's white paper on the subject that moving care out of hospitals would mean health trusts "will need to review their current plans for PFI-financed hospitals".
The government wants to ensure that the schemes are financially robust, affordable and sustainable and there will be need for formal approval in future before preferred bidders are appointed.
However, the government insists that PFI will remain the major vehicle for delivering capital investment in acute services in the NHS even after the reappraisal. The whole programme is likely to be of the order of 7 billion pounds to 9 billion pounds.
