AMSTERDAM (Thomson Financial) - The AEX index opened higher following Wall Street's higher close overnight, with Ahold leading this morning's gainers following its second-quarter earnings.MAJOR INDICESAEX 516.27, up 5.48 pointsAMX Midcap 712.42, up 5.72 pointsGovernment bonds mixedMAJOR GAINERS-Retailer Ahold addded 5.60 pct to 9.62 eur after saying it will increase the size of its share buyback by 1 bln eur and reporting well-received second-quarter earnings-Shell gained 1.97 pct to 27.92 eur-Heineken gained 1.81 pct to 44.98 eur, boosted by Belgian peer Inbev's forecast-beating set of second quarter results-TomTom was 1.20 pct up at 45.45 eur. The company said it will present a new personal navigation device, the GO 920T, during the IFA consumer technologyexhibition, slated to start in Berlin tomorrow-Ordina led midcap climbers, up 6.19 pct at 14.07 eur as Citigroup initiated coverage on the issue with a 'buy' rating and a target price of 17.75 eur-Vopak climbed 2.85 pct to 41.55 eur ahead of first-half figures, due tomorrow and seen by analysts as being strong-Boskalis Westminster was 0.90 pct higher at 50.67 eur as ING upped its rating on the stock to 'buy' from 'hold' and increased its target price to 40 eur from 26.7-Pharming gained 5.22 pct to 2.82 eur after saying it achieved positive results from its European Phase III clinical trial of Rhucin, its lead productMAJOR DECLINERS-Vedior continued recent losses, off 0.37 pct at 16.23-Corporate Express was 0.12 pct lower at 8.37 eur-Crucell led midcap decliners, off 0.69 pct at 14.48 eurMike Croall; mike.croall@thomson.commc/ajbCOPYRIGHT
