MINNEAPOLIS (AFX) - Honeywell International Inc., which makes a number of products for home, auto, aircraft, military and industrial use, said Tuesday that it received a 23-year, $28.6 million contract from the General Services Administration to upgrade building systems and reduce energy costs at the new Food and Drug Administration headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.The upgrades are expected to help cut energy costs by $3 million a year while reducing the FDA's vulnerability to disruptions on the electric grid, the company said.Honeywell will install two natural gas-fired turbine generators; two 2,000-ton centrifugal chillers; a 1,130-ton absorption chiller and ancillary plant equipment and distribution systems at a utility plant. It will also provide operations and maintenance services for the seven additional campus buildings supported by the project. The contract will be funded from the energy and operational savings created by the upgrades.Honeywell is guaranteeing the savings, so operating budgets will not need to be increased and additional taxpayer dollars will not be used, the company said.Shares of Honeywell gained 72 cents to $44.95 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
