NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AFX) - Former Deputy Gov. Dave Cooley on Tuesday announced the creation of Cooley Public Strategies, which will operate as a subsidiary of Nashville public relations firm McNeely Piggot & Fox.Cooley resigned from the governor's office this month to return to the private sector. He caused some controversy during his tenure because of his role in the dismissal of a speeding ticket he got from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and his work with the troubled Department of Safety.Cooley said in a release that his new group will 'provide assistance with problem solving, strategic planning and market positioning for private-sector companies and organizations.'Cooley was a principal at McNeely Piggot & Fox from 1993 to 2001. A former aide to then Nashville Mayor Phil Bredesen, Cooley left the firm to run Bredesen's successful gubernatorial campaign in 2002. After Bredesen's win, Cooley was appointed the governor's top aide. The deputy governor is appointed by the governor and is not in the line of succession. Bredesen named Stuart Brunson, the campaign manager of his successful re-election bid, to replace Cooley.Bredesen appears to have abandoned earlier plans to split up the responsibilities of the deputy governor by creating a new position of chief of staff to handle internal operations.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
