TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Japanese automakers manufactured more vehicles in Asia excluding Japan than in North America in 2006, according to a survey of 12 domestic automakers by the Nikkei. The survey found that combined production in Asia outside of Japan rose 8 pct to 4.27 mln units, while output in North America came to 3.92 mln, down 3 pct.Japanese automakers' North American production declined for the first time since the mid-1980s amid slumping sales of full-sized vehicles, which are produced locally, and cutbacks by Nissan Motor Co Ltd, according to the survey. The survey classified 'Asian' production as that taking place in China, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, India and Pakistan, while North America comprises the US and Canada, but does not include Mexico.Among leading makers, Toyota Motor Corp boosted production in Asia by 20 pct to 1.45 mln units, while Honda Motor Co Ltd raised Asian output 18 pct, according to the survey.(1 usd = 121.61 yen)yasuhiko.seki@xfn.com
