TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Japan's unemployment rate rose to 4.0 percent in September from 3.8 percent in August, data released Tuesday by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications showed.Manufacturers, as well as the service sector which has been taking up the bulk of new workers, curtailed the intake of new employees.Economists were expecting the unemployment rate to stay at 3.8 percent last month.The jobless rate stood at 3.6 percent in July, which was the lowest jobless rate since February 1998.The male jobless rate rose to 4.0 percent from 3.8 percent in August, while the female unemployment rate increased to 4.0 percent from 3.7 percent, the ministry said.(1 US dollar = 114.71 yen)kaori.kaneko@thomson.com-yas/ngCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
