SAN FRANCISCO (Thomson Financial) - Amgen Inc. late Friday reported interim results from the Phase III 'Prepare' study of Aranesp in breast cancer patients, and said the trial showed no significant difference between the Aranesp and control groups. The company said available data as of Oct. 30 showed numerically more deaths and tumor progression events on the Aranesp arm compared with the control group in the long-term follow up.A formal statistical analysis of survival is expected in early 2009, Amgen said'This interim analysis shows that the use of Aranesp to support neo-adjuvant chemotherapy has no significant impact on tumor response to chemotherapy at the time of surgery,' said Professor Michael Untch, M.D., the principal investigator. 'No definitive conclusions should be drawn from theinterim results of the long-term follow up until the final study report iscompleted.'Aranesp was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2001 for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic renal failure.Shares of Amgen closed the regular session down 21 cents at $55.25.Gabriel Madwaygm/khCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
