Solvay, BASF to build new PVDC, mulls Asian location

BRUSSELS (AFX) - Belgian chemicals group Solvay SA and German peer BASF AG said their SolVin joint venture is planning to build a second Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) plant.

PVDC latex is a specialty barrier material used as coating in packaging, essentially in the food and pharmaceutical sectors.

The new plant would produce around 10,000 tonnes of PVDC annually and will possibly be located in Asia. Solvay currently has a site in Map Tha Put, Thailand.

SolVin said it will make a decision in the third quarter of 2007.

Solvay owns 75 pct of SolVin and BASF owns the remaining 25 pct.
