NEW YORK (AP) - Drug developer Progenics Pharmaceuticals Inc. said it will submit a marketing application Friday with the Food and Drug Administration for a constipation treatment targeted toward people taking opiate painkillers.Progenics, which is partnering with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals on the drug, is applying for a form of methylnaltrexone that is administered just under the skin. Constipation occurs in most people who are prescribed opiate painkillers. The application will include data from two late-stage studies showing that methylnaltrexone significantly improved the constipation induced by opiate painkillers. If the drug is approved, Progenics and Wyeth plan to launch single-use vials of methylnaltrexone in early 2008, and pre-filled syringes later that year.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
