LONDON (Thomson Financial) - The UK government said on Monday it plans to offer more defence contracts to small- to medium-sized businesses. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said it intends to put more contracts out to competitive bidding by smaller businesses by lowering the value at which the MoD has to advertise those contracts. From Apr 30, the threshold for 'warlike' requirements will be lowered from 500,000 stg to 93,000 stg and lowered again on Jun 30 to 40,000.The threshold for 'non-warlike' requirements will also be reduced on June 30 from 93,000 stg to 40,000 stg. From June 30, MoD project teams will be encouraged to consider advertising requirements with values as low as 20,000 stg. This change could generate up to 7,000 additional adverts a year, the MoD said.Defence minister Lord Paul Drayson said just over half of all MoD contracts let were placed with small- to medium-sized businesses in 2005, to the value of more than 500 mln stg.'Today's announcement is a significant development and one which I am convinced will further promote a dynamic and competitive supplier base,' Drayson said.philip.waller@thomson.compaw/amCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
