ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Gov. Martin O'Malley met Monday with a governor from South Korea to encourage good business ties between their two states.O'Malley signed a memorandum of understanding with Gov. Tae Ho Kim of the province of Gyeongsangam. The governors met to reaffirm a sister-state relationship in effect since 1991.'What we have done today is to reaffirm our commitment to work cooperatively together,' O'Malley said.Maryland has sister-state ties with about 10 other states in foreign countries. Nancy Wallace, director of international operations for the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, said such arrangements can translate into business opportunities.'We are seeing Korean companies come from not just this province, but all over Korea -- landing in Maryland, establishing a presence in Maryland, hiring people from Maryland -- and we are seeing Maryland companies exporting their products and services into Korea.'Wallace said Maryland is working on developing a sister-state memorandum with Liberia, which would be the first such understanding Maryland has had with a state in Africa.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
