FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - BASF AG's Wintershall gas operations is to offer to supply Poland with gas produced in western Europe, to reduce the country's dependence on Russian gas, a Wintershall spokesman told Thomson Financial News, confirming a report in the German newspaper Handelsblatt.Handelsblatt reported that Wintershall would be prepared to connect Poland to the planned Opal pipeline - which for 480 km runs parallel to Poland's western border.'In the future, gas produced in the UK or the Netherlands could be channelled into Poland,' head of Wintershall's Wingas Transport unit Ingo Neubert told Handelsblatt.The Opal pipeline is to be under the ownership of E.ON Ruhrgas and Wingas - a joint venture between Wintershall and Gazprom.krysia.diver@thomson.comkd/dcaCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
