ATLANTA (AP) - An Atlanta cleaning product manufacturer was fined $3.8 million and ordered to serve three years probation after pleading guilty on Friday to violating the Clean Water Act.Acting U.S. Attorney Sally Quillan Yates called the sentence for Acuity Specialty Products Group Inc. the harshest imposed on a company in the district for a violation of environmental laws. Daniel Schaffer, the company's former director of environmental compliance, pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Water Act in February 2006 and is awaiting sentencing.Acuity makes numerous detergent and cleaning products -- including liquids, aerosols, powders and acids -- for industrial and domestic purposes. Many of these products are marketed under the brand name Zep.Among the violations Acuity was accused of, federal prosecutors said that beginning as early as September 1998 and continuing until November 2002, Acuity submitted false information on its wastewater flow, phosphorous output and pH levels to the Atlanta wastewater treatment facility. The company also failed to report significant discharges to the city, including a 10,000-gallon phosphorous discharge in April 2000 and an acid spill in March 2002, prosecutors said.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
