LONDON - Sony's PlaysStation Portable (PSP) is all set for a delayed debut in the UK on September 1, but it is feared that the supply is way below the frenzied demand for the ultimate gaming device.
It is reported that only about 150,000 machines have arrived in the UK for the much-anticipated launch and that most of these have already been booked in the in pre-order rush. Only a limited number would be available for retailing.
The device has triggered a frenzy like never before with retailers rushing to get supplies, so much so that Sony had moved to court when it found that impatient retailers and gamers alike were importing the handheld from Japan, an activity referred to as 'gray imports.' The company had got a court injunction to stop these imports, but far from discouraging consumers, it has only served to whet the appetite.
On top of this, Sony is promoting the PSP as the " first true mobile entertainment device." For in addition to playing irresistible games, PSP also stores digital photos, plays MP3 music files and video. Some of Hollywood's biggest grossers in recent times including Spider-Man 2, Swat, Dodgeball, and Kill Bill, have been released on the device. The introduction of the Universal Media Disc (UMD) has made it an easy task to view movies on the PSP. Sony has also unleashed a blitzkrieg of support for its flagship console offering a basic TV service in Japan.
This service helps the audience download film trailers and TV programmes on the PSP. Such is the popularity of the PSP that exclusive websites dedicated to it have sprung up. One is the http://www.geneonanimation.com, where you can find all PSP related news. The site claims to be "one of the first official sites designed strictly for handheld browsing."
Sony meanwhile has to cope with the demand and come up with the supplies fast, especially in the UK, if it is to avoid a 'gray import' scenario once again.
