LONDON: Scottish & Southern Energy Plc. said it is investing up to 2.4 million pounds in a fund to support renewable energy projects and technologies that are being developed by companies.
The fund, Sigma Sustainable Energies Fund, launched by Edinburgh-based venture capital firm Sigma Technology Group, will also have investments from the European Regional Development Fund (2.4 million pounds), Fife Enterprise (500,000 pounds), and a group of private investors (300,000 pounds) besides Sigma Technology Investments (400,000 pounds).
SSE said its investment could result in business development opportunities in technologies that can help the country to meet its emission targets even while generating adequate quantum of electricity. The decision is a result of an energy policy review by the government announced last week, which underscored the need to cut greenhouse gas emissions and to generate the required energy to meet the country's needs.
A spokesperson for the company said one way to do both is to develop technologies that capture renewable sources indigenous to the country like wind, water, waves, tides and sunshine. She said the company wants to identify the technologies that tackle carbon dioxide issues but more than that, by being from an indigenous source of energy, address the reliability-of-energy-supply issue.
SSE had in October last invested in Swift Turbines, an Edinburgh company, which has developed and manufactured a domestic rooftop wind turbine.
The company said the investment of 2.4 million pounds need not be the last. As it is interested in opportunities to develop and implement low and zero carbon technologies more investments may be forthcoming.
The fund intends to invest up to 500,000 pounds in companies located east of Scotland working on wind, solar, hydroelectric, biomass, ocean, hydrogen and geothermal projects.
