LONDON: University graduates are in demand and employment opportunities for them are bright this year, according to a new study. Firms are planning to increase their intake and the highest demands are going to be in finance and manufacturing realms, the survey by Incomes Data Services indicated.
The number of graduates hired by private companies and public sector organisations grew by more than 7 per cent in 2005 and it is all set to rise by another 6 per cent in 2006, the study found.
The survey, which covered some 100 firms, also found that starting salary for graduates with a top degree increased by 3.4 per cent to 21,400 pounds in 2005. This is expected further rise by 3.3 per cent this year.
At least a third of employers felt graduates lacked skills, especially business awareness.
Steve Tatton, who prepared a report on the survey, said there is enough jobs around for new graduates and at the same time employers can recruit candidates capable of producing future prosperity.
The study found that graduates employed three years ago received an average of nearly 32,000 pounds now. This is clear indication that those graduates who will be taken in now can expect to have swift increases in salaries.
The study also found that nearly 70 per cent of undergraduate students receiving bursary were absorbed by the respective sponsors.
