PARIS (Thomson Financial) - Egyptian mobile phone operator Orascom is interested in the licence for the fourth French UMTS third generation mobile phone network, Les Echos newspaper reported without naming its sources. It held talks with cable operator Numericable about a joint bid, but these have been aborted and Orascom could logically now approach Iliad SA's Free, with which it has had talks in the past, according to the business daily. Most observers think a solo bid is unlikely, according to the report.Orascom already has activities in Italy, Greece, North Africa and the Near East, Les Echos said.Iliad said last night it has submitted an application for the fourth licence to watchdog ARCEP.Andrew.Newby@Thomson.coman/lceCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
