TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Sharp Corp's operating profit for the fiscal third quarter ended December was 12.6 pct higher than a year before on brisk sales of liquid crystal display televisions and cellphones, the company said.

But the company has left unchanged its forecasts of earnings for the fiscal year ending March.

Sharp posted third-quarter operating profit of 49.28 bln yen, up from 43.76 bln yen a year earlier.

Its net profit increased by 8.5 pct to 28.50 bln yen and its sales expanded by 12.1 pct to 820.15 bln yen.

The company sold 1.81 mln of its Aquos brand LCD TVs in the fiscal third quarter, 49 pct more than a year before. Cellphone sales rose 18 pct to 3.55 mln.

While the average prices of all LCD TVs sold in Japan were 20-30 pct lower in the fiscal third quarter than in the second, Sharp said it had seen a rise of some 9 pct in the average selling prices of its Aquos TVs by shifting its focus to TV sets with larger screens.

The operating profit of Sharp's audio-visual and telecommunications equipment division rose 18.2 pct to 13.86 bln yen, and the operating profit of its electronic devices business (which makes LCD panels) rose 12.5 pct to 19.15 bln yen.

Even so, Sharp is sticking to its plan to sell 6 mln LCD TVs and 13 mln cellphones in this fiscal year.

It has also left unchanged its forecasts of earnings for the year. It expects record net profit of 100 bln yen and record operating profit of 180 bln yen on record revenue of 3.0 trln yen.
