MARTINSRIED, Gemany (Thomson Financial) - GPC Biotech AG and Pharmion Corp said satraplatin has failed in a trial to significantly improve survival of cancer patients compared with a placebo.GPC also said it is re-evaluating plans to develop the drug candidate. The Phase III trial compared satraplatin plus prednisone with a placebo plus prednisone to treat 950 patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC).The median survival was 61.3 weeks for the satraplatin arm compared to 61.4 weeks for the control group.'We are extremely disappointed with the findings we announced today,' said GPC's chief executive Bernd Seizinger in the statement.'We are currently discussing with our partners, Pharmion and Yakult, plans for the future development of satraplatin.'The CEO of Pharmion, Patrick Mahaffy, said the results will affect an ongoing review of the drug's application for marketing authorization by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA), which was submitted in June.maria.sheahan@thomson.commas/wjCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
