RALEIGH, N.C. (AFX) - A satellite television company must pay $676,500 for making illegal telemarketing calls, including 400 calls that tied up phone lines at a Mocksville hospital for two days, Attorney General Roy Cooper said Wednesday.U.S. District Court Judge Carlton Tilley Jr. levied the judgment Monday against TNT DBS Marketing Inc. of Arlington, Texas. Tilley said TNT, doing business as Digital World Satellite, Satellite Solutions and Satellite City, must pay $275,000 in damages for the calls to Davie County Hospital in early 2004 and for tying up phone lines with calls at Continental Teves of Morganton in late 2003.The court also said TNT should pay $401,500 for similar calls to 82 North Carolina residents, in violation of state law. That money will go to the public schools.Cooper, whose office filed the original complaint in 2004, contends the company violated federal and state 'Do Not Call' laws by using prerecorded messages.'Telemarketing calls are unwelcome and annoying, and in this case, even dangerous,' Cooper said in a statement. 'We put a stop to the calls, and now this telemarketer has been ordered to pay for disrupting a North Carolina hospital, a local business, and consumers' peace and quiet.'Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
