FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - The German grid regulator does not collect employee data of companies which are not licensed by the regulator, a spokeswoman told Thomson Financial News. She denied an earlier press report that a survey the regulator conducted includes the total number of employees in the industry and can thus be used to measure the percentage of employees covered by a minimum wage agreement recently concluded between Deutsche Post World Net AG and services union ver.di.The regulator earlier released a statement putting the number of employees at postal service companies licensed by the regulator at some 200,000.The statement said Deutsche Post employs 162,938 employees, 122,437 of which are in mail delivery.Sueddeutsche Zeitung this morning cited a data survey of the grid regulator saying that there are 414,600 employees in the German postal services industry and that the minimum wage agreement between Deutsche Post and ver.di applies to only 42 pct employees in the industry. The agreement, which foresees minimum wages of 8-9.80 eur, needs to cover at least 50 pct of employees if it is to be declared mandatory by the government for Deutsche Post's competitors.Sueddeutsche said that if civil servants are excluded from the calculation, the agreement covers only 33 pct of the industry. An industry-wide minimum wage at Deutsche Post's wage level would decrease its competitors cost advantages as its monopoly on mail below 50 grams will end on Jan 1.frederik.richter@thomson.comfr1/jlcCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
