WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - It was a short retirement for former Wichita Eagle publisher Lou Heldman.Wichita State University announced Tuesday that Heldman will join its staff as a distinguished senior fellow in media management and journalism.Heldman, 58, announced his surprise retirement in September in a newsroom meeting, telling employees he would leave by the end of the month.Heldman will teach and do research in the W. Frank Barton School of Business and the Elliott School of Communication at Wichita State, the university said. He also will be involved in special projects in the provost's office.'We are extremely excited to be joined by someone with Lou Heldman's record of achievement,' Gary Miller, provost and vice president for academic affairs and research, said in a news release. 'The unique set of experiences that he brings to the university will be of immeasurable value to our students and our faculty. We are just delighted to welcome him as a Shocker.'Heldman took over the helm of the Wichita Eagle in January 2002. He has worked in the newspaper industry for about 35 years.While a reporter at the Detroit Free Press in the mid-1970s, Heldman taught basic journalism classes as an adjunct at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Lansing Community College and Wayne State University, according to Wichita State.'My new assignment is broad enough to cover each of my major interests: journalism, business and projects to advance the university and community,' Heldman said in a news release.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
