MILPITAS, Calif. (AFX) - Strong test and measurement sales helped networking equipment maker JDS Uniphase Corp. post a fiscal second-quarter profit Wednesday that reversed a year-ago loss.For the quarter ended Dec. 31, the company earned $23.2 million, or 10 cents per share, compared with a loss of $42.1 million, or 20 cents per share, in the same period the prior year.Adjusted earnings, excluding restructuring, stock options and other costs, totaled $30 million, or 13 cents per share.Sales rose 17 percent to $366.3 million from $321.9 million.Analysts, on average, were looking for earnings of 10 cents per share on sales of $362.8 million, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.JDSU provides communications test and measurement and optical products for telecommunications service providers, cable operators and network equipment makers.The company's test and measurement sales $168.2 million gained 15 percent from the same quarter in the prior year. This segment represented 46 percent of total revenue.Optical communications revenue of $132.7 million rose up 21 percent from the same quarter in the previous year, representing 36 percent of total net sales.Advanced optical technologies sales $40.4 slipped 2 percent and represented 11 percent of total sales.Shares closed up 49 cents, or 2.8 percent, at $17.78 on the Nasdaq.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
