LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's estimated seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 3.1 percent in September -- a tenth of a point less than August but a tenth of a point higher than September 2006.The September figure was 1.6 percentage points below the national figure of 4.7 percent, which was a tenth of a point higher than August 2007 and a tenth higher than September 2006, the Nebraska Department of Labor said in a report released Wednesday.State Labor Commissioner Fernando Lecuona III said the September report indicates there are 1 1/2 jobs for every unemployed person in the state. He said a strong state economy was evidenced by the increase in jobs over the year and the 3.1 percent unemployment rate.Since September of last year, the department said, Nebraska has added more than 12,000 jobs. The top three private growth sectors: professional and business services, 4,538 jobs; education and health services, 3,958 jobs; and leisure and hospitality, 2,487 jobs.The estimated seasonally adjusted work force rose to 990,656 in September, the department said. Of them, an estimated 30,734 were unemployed, which was 1,113 more than September 2006.Over the past year, the largest drop in jobs came in the manufacturing sector: 1,186. Total employment in manufacturing fell to an estimated 100,224 -- the lowest figure so far in 2007, the department said.For Lincoln, the September unemployment rate was 2.5 percent, down 0.2 percentage points from August and the same rate as September last year.For Omaha, the September rate was 3.1 percent, down a tenth of a point from August and a tenth higher than September 2006.Omaha and Lincoln unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted and are not compared with the state unemployment rate.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
