YORK, Pa. (AFX) - The union representing nearly 2,800 employees at Harley-Davidson's largest plant overwhelmingly rejected a contract offer Wednesday and authorized a strike if a new agreement cannot be reached before the current contract expires Friday.Ninety-six percent of the workers who attended a meeting to hear details of the company's offer voted to reject it, and 98 percent subsequently voted to authorize a strike, said Tom Boger, business representative for International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 175.Union officials said concessions that the company sought on health care and pensions were among the reasons the contract offer was rejected.A strike would begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday if both sides cannot reach an agreement, Boger said.Harley-Davidson officials did not return messages left at the York plant or the corporate headquarters in Milwaukee on Wednesday. The company and the union have been negotiating a new contract since early December. The factory employs more than 3,200 union and nonunion workers. On the New York Stock Exchange, Harley-Davidson shares fell $1.28, or 1.8 percent, to close at $68.27.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
