PHILADELPHIA (AFX) - The city's longtime black talk-radio station, which shut down last month, has been replaced with an alternative rock format broadcasting in high definition.WHAT-AM, which for decades called itself the 'voice of the African-American community' in Philadelphia, is now being called 'Skin Radio.' It began broadcasting in high-definition on Wednesday morning, said new owner Tom Kelly of Marconi Broadcasting Co.'The alternative music audience in Philadelphia has been starving for this music,' Kelly said. The next-generation digital broadcasting technology, called HD Radio, is touted as having FM-quality sound on AM stations, as well as better reception and the possibility of broadcasting data such as song titles and artists' names, like satellite radio does.Traditional analog radios can still receive the station's analog simulcast, Kelly said.WHAT was purchased for $5 million in November by Marconi, based in suburban Havertown, from Inner City Broadcasting Corp., based in New York City. Kelly, Marconi's president, owns a company that performs market research for radio stations.Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
