MILLBURN, N.J. (AP) - Police on Wednesday were investigating a motor vehicle accident that claimed the life of a contractor doing routine maintenance work for Verizon.The construction worker was a 54-year-old man from Kearny who was employed by J. Fletcher Creamer Construction Corporation, according to Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.The collision happened shortly after 8:15 a.m. Wednesday as the man was helping replace manhole covers on South Orange Avenue, Loriquet said.A car driven by a 72-year-old woman from East Orange drove through the work area, striking the contractor.He was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead around 8:30 a.m.A second construction worker and the driver of the vehicle were also taken to the hospital.The construction worker's injuries were not immediately known, but authorities said the woman was taken in for observation.Verizon spokesman Rich Young said the crew was working in an area blocked by cones.According to Loriquet, detectives believe visibility may have played a role in the accident.He said the investigation is ongoing.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
