BOSTON (Thomson Financial) - Oxigene Inc. said Monday that its Zybrestat drug has achieved the primary efficacy endpoint for Stage 1 of an ongoing Phase II platinum-resistant ovarian cancer clinical trial.Zybrestat is the company's therapeutic product in a class of vascular disrupting agents aimed at treating tumors by depriving them of oxygen and thereby killing the cells. The Waltham, Mass.-based biotechnology company said the clinical trial will proceed to its second stage, in which an additional 25 patients will be enrolled.Oxigene said the initial results with the Zybrestat-chemotherapy combination indicate that Zybrestat has clinical activity against a wide variety of solid tumors and support further testing and development of the drug for ovarian carcinoma. The stock closed at $2.18 on Friday.Shares rose 26% to $2.75 in premarket trading on volume of 6,700.Greg Saulniergs/pcCOPYRIGHTCopyright Thomson Financial News Limited 2007.
