WASHINGTON (AP) - Government regulators said Friday they have approved a new drug from Baxter International to treat a rare blood disorder found in just one in a million newborns.Baxter's Ceprotin is designed to treat patients who have unusually low levels of a protein which helps prevent blood clots. People with a deficiency of Protein C face unusually high risk of clotting, according to a release by the Food and Drug Administration. If left untreated, clotting may result in blindness, severe brain damage, multi-organ failure and death for these patients, according to the FDA.The new drug from Deerfield, Illinois-based Baxter contains Protein C taken from healthy human blood donors, and is designed for emergency use by people with the disorder after blood clots have formed in the veins.Shares of Baxter International Inc. fell 55 cents to close at $52.67 on the New York Stock Exchange.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
