LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Irish Sea ferry operator Celtic Link was targeted by Britain and Ireland's transport unions today in a protest over pay and conditions for workers on the company's vessels.Senior figures from the dozen UK and Irish unions affiliated to the International Transport Workers' Federation delivered a letter to the privately-owned ferry company's Liverpool offices urging the company to end its 'poverty' pay rates, the RMT union said in a statement.Seafarers aboard the Cyprus-flagged 'Celtic Star', which operates between Dublin and Liverpool, are paid as little as 1.90 stg an hour, the ITF said.'We want operators like Celtic Link to co-operate with us to end poverty pay and introduce decent employment standards,' said ITF co-ordinator Norrie McVicar. When contacted by Thomson Financial News, Celtic Link declined to comment on the union's claims, saying it was unaware of the protest in Liverpool.paul.sandle@thomson.comps/jfrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
