Qualcomm criticizes patent verdict

SAN DIEGO (AFX) - Qualcomm Inc. said Monday that it was disappointed with a federal jury's finding that rival Broadcom Corp. did not infringe on two patents for video compression technology.

Qualcomm disagreed with the jury's advisory findings that the company withheld key information from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and a standards-making group. U.S. District Judge Rudi Brewster will rule on the advisory findings later.

San Diego-based Qualcomm has not decided whether to appeal.

But in a partial victory for the company, the jury ruled Qualcomm's patents were valid.

The decision, reached late Friday after six hours of deliberations, was the latest turn in a long-running legal battle between the two semiconductor makers. Qualcomm claimed that Broadcom violated patents on how to compress video signals -- a technology used in DVD players, digital televisions and iPod music players.

Qualcomm has been under fire from Irvine-based Broadcom, Nokia Corp. and other wireless equipment makers who say Qualcomm charges excessive licensing fees on its patented technologies. Qualcomm said Friday's ruling will have no impact on its licensing business.

Qualcomm shares fell 1 percent, or 36 cents, to close Monday at $37.15 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
