NEW STANTON, Pa. (AP) - Westmoreland County officials plan to meet with Sony Corp. to look for a way to use more of a massive television plant where Sony plans to cut 900 jobs this year.Sony is going to start making rear-projection televisions in Mexico, and is retooling the plant near New Stanton so it can use more automation, and fewer workers, to make other kinds of televisions there in the future.Sony officials stress that they are not closing the plant. But county officials said some parts of the Sony property could be put to better use in an effort to bring more jobs back to the site.Sony spokesman Michael Koff said the company is willing to discuss subletting some of the giant factory -- which covers about 42 acres under a roof -- to other companies who need plant space. But he said not all of the empty space will be available, because Sony wants to keep the potential to expand as new product lines develop.Koff said Sony previously reconfigured the plant in the early 1990s when it changed from manufacturing picture tubes to assembling rear-projection TVs.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
