EU takes Italy, Netherlands, 4 others to court on telecoms infringements |

BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission said that under the latest round of telecoms infringement proceedings, it has decided to refer six Member States to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), Europe's highest court, including Italy and The Netherlands.The cases against Italy, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Portugal and Slovakia refer to a failure to implement caller location technology for Europe's emergency number 112.Estonia is being taken to the ECJ too, for failing to carry out required market analysis under the EU telecom rules.Additionally, the commission has opened a new case by sending Cyprus a letter of formal notice, the first stage in legal proceedings, on access for operators to mobile markets.However, the commission is also closing four cases.Proceedings will be ended against Finland and Luxembourg, on the designation of the universal service provider and cost accounting respectively.It has also closed two non-compliance cases against Germany concerning the Universal Service Directive and the e-Privacy Directive following legislative amendments by the government there.frances.robinson@afxnews.comfr/twCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2007.
