MILAN (Thomson Financial) - Alitalia SpA has cancelled about 10 flights this morning in continued disruption after yesterday it cancelled about 400 flights, mostly due to an air traffic controllers strike, reports said.

Agence France Presse, citing Telenews news agency, said today's cancellations involved mainly domestic flights and were caused by continued protests over contract renewal by cabin crew.

Alitalia officials said they could not confirm the cancellations, adding they expect to make a statement around midday.

Yesterday, only about 30 of the overall 400 Alitalia flight cancellations were caused by a strike of cabin crew, while the rest were caused by traffic controllers employed by the ENAC authority.

Industry sources said Alitalia is able to manage the cabin crew strikes and limit cancellations by using staff in reserve.

In addition, not all cabin crew are following their trade union orders to protest over their contracts, which don't expire until end-2007, they said.

The industry sources could not say if the ongoing sale process by the government of at least a 39.9 pct stake in Alitalia is a factor in protests.

Union leaders were quoted in reports this morning opposing the government's plan to possibly sell all of its 49.9 pct in the airline.

Yesterday, the government gave further details on the privatisation, including the scope for bidders to buy the whole 49.9 pct.
