TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW) (TSMC) will purchase equipment from NXP Semiconductors, a unit of Philips Electronics NV, for its plant in Shanghai to raise production capacity in China, the Commercial Times reported, citing unidentified sources in the wafer equipment industry.TSMC will buy eight-inch wafer processing equipment from NXP's plant in Boeblingen, Germany.TSMC plans to raise the monthly capacity at its Shanghai plant to 90,000 wafers by middle of this year from 30,000 at present, the report said. The daily also quoted unnamed TSMC officials as saying that the company is also studying the feasibility of buying eight-inch wafer processing equipment from integrated devices manufacturing firms but that a decision has yet to be made.Any capacity expansion at its Shanghai plant is pending to approval of Taipei on its investments for 0.18-micron process technology in the mainland, while there is no capacity expansion target for that site now, the paper quoted the unnamed officials as saying.adela.lin@afxasia.com
