BRUSSELS (AFX) - The European Commission said that German electricity company E.ON AG's poor security system was to blame for a major electricity blackout in Europe last winter and called for new EU standards to be introduced.EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs said: 'Europe should draw lessons from this blackout that left millions of Europeans in various member states without electricity and develop stronger network security standards.'The power outage left 10 mln people -- half of them in France -- in the dark and cold. Belgium, the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain were also affected.A report by the Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE), which covers operators in 23 European countries, confirmed the commission's analysis in favour of common action for ensuring the security of electricity supply throughout the European Union,' the EU executive said.Investment in the European grid should also be increased along with the effective 'unbundling' of energy companies -- or the splitting up of the production and distribution sectors into separate entities -- the commission added.antonia.vandevelde@thomson.comafp/ava/ava/jrCOPYRIGHTCopyright AFX News Limited 2006.
