SALT LAKE CITY (AFX) - Three outdoor products companies announced plans to relocate to Utah or expand existing operations here -- news state officials say solidifies the state as a premiere location for outdoor-related businesses.'Our unique environment and unparalleled quality of life, coupled with our state's great location, incredible workforce and friendly business environment make Utah a perfect fit for outdoor related business,' Economic Development Corporation of Utah President and CEO Jeff Edwards said in a statement Monday.Representatives from Backcountry.com, Peregrine Outfitters and Smith Sport Optics made their announcements on the third day of the annual Outdoor Retailers Winter Market Expo, a trade show that annually brings more than 14,000 outdoor industry manufacturers, retailers, distributors and wholesalers to Salt Lake City.Online retailer Backcountry.com already has a workforce of 430 in Park City and West Valley City, Utah. The company, which sells more than 250 brands of outdoor gear plans a $4.8 million expansion, which would increase its workforce by 1,250, an EDC Utah news release states.Vermont-based wholesale distributor Peregrine Outfitters plans to open an Ogden, Utah warehouse for product distribution. The operation will employ 25 workers.Also expanding in Utah is well-known ski goggle and helmet manufacturer Smith Sport Optics. The company has acquired a 120,000-square foot manufacturing plant in Clearfield, Utah. The company initially considered relocating, but has decided to stay, retaining 201 Utah jobs, EDC Utah spokeswoman Tauni Everett said.
