SALT LAKE CITY (AFX) - Three outdoor products companies announced plans to relocate to Utah or expand existing operations here -- news state officials say solidifies the state as a premiere location for outdoor-related businesses.

'Our unique environment and unparalleled quality of life, coupled with our state's great location, incredible workforce and friendly business environment make Utah a perfect fit for outdoor related business,' Economic Development Corporation of Utah President and CEO Jeff Edwards said in a statement Monday.

Representatives from Backcountry.com, Peregrine Outfitters and Smith Sport Optics made their announcements on the third day of the annual Outdoor Retailers Winter Market Expo, a trade show that annually brings more than 14,000 outdoor industry manufacturers, retailers, distributors and wholesalers to Salt Lake City.

Online retailer Backcountry.com already has a workforce of 430 in Park City and West Valley City, Utah. The company, which sells more than 250 brands of outdoor gear plans a $4.8 million expansion, which would increase its workforce by 1,250, an EDC Utah news release states.

Vermont-based wholesale distributor Peregrine Outfitters plans to open an Ogden, Utah warehouse for product distribution. The operation will employ 25 workers.

Also expanding in Utah is well-known ski goggle and helmet manufacturer Smith Sport Optics. The company has acquired a 120,000-square foot manufacturing plant in Clearfield, Utah. The company initially considered relocating, but has decided to stay, retaining 201 Utah jobs, EDC Utah spokeswoman Tauni Everett said. Smith also plans to expand its Utah workforce by about 60 over the next few years, she said.
