Japan March department store sales down 1.5 pct year-on-year |

TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Sales at department stores amounted to 667.4 bln yen last month, 1.5 pct less than a year before, falling for the first time in three months because of unseasonable weather that reduced the number of shoppers, the Japan Department Stores Association said.In February, sales had been 1.7 pct higher than a year before.The figure combines the sales of 95 companies running 278 department stores that were open for at least a year before the survey was conducted. The data have been adjusted to facilitate comparisons on a same-store basis.Including sales at stores that were newly opened within the year to March 31, sales last month were 2.4 pct lower than a year before, been 1.1 pct higher in February.In Tokyo, sales at 28 department stores were 2.2 pct lower at 162.5 bln yen, having been 0.3 pct lower in February.Nationally, department store sales on a same-store basis fell 0.5 pct to 7.757 trln yen in the year to March 31. Unadjusted, they fell 1.2 pct. In Tokyo they fell 1.1 pct.Nationally, sales of clothing last month, which accounted for 39.8 pct of revenue, were 3.1 pct lower than a year before.Sales of food, which accounted for 21.5 pct, were 1.7 pct higher.Sales of furniture and home appliances, which accounted for 14.7 pct, were down 0.8 pct.Sales of personal belongings, which accounted for 13.4 pct, were down 2.7 pct.Sales of everyday household products, which accounted for 3.2 pct, were down 1.8 pct.Sales at store restaurants and cafeterias, which accounted for 2.6 pct, were down 1.3 pct.Sales of miscellaneous items, which accounted for 1.5 pct, were down 3.2 pct.Revenue from services, which accounted for 1.0 pct of revenue, was up 2.5 pct.(1 usd = 117.90 yen)kaori.kaneko@xfn.com
