ZURICH (Thomson Financial) - Synthes Inc reported a first quarter sales rise of 14.2 pct to 658.0 mln usd, up from 576.4 mln usd a year earlier, amid continued growth in all product lines and driven by successful product introductions and global expansion of its sales force.

Synthes first quarter sales were thus in line with the analyst forecasts of 654.0-671.1 mln usd or 663.4 mln on average.

Looking ahead, the group confirmed its full year outlook of achieving low double digit sales growth in local currencies.

In the first quarter, double digit sales growth was led by North America, with sales rising 13.5 pct in local currencies to 417.6 mln usd and the Rest of the World, boasting a 20.1 pct sales rise to 34.8 mln usd, Synthes said.

Meanwhile, Europe experienced strong growth in many key markets with sales up 7.4 pct in local currencies at 148.8 mln usd, while in Asia Pacific Synthes sales rose 7 pct to 56.8 mln usd.

In terms of segments, the US trauma business continued to outpace the market with strong growth in all product lines.

The global growth of the Spine business was driven by a broad range of products including the Interbody Fusion and Biomaterials and recent product launches, while growth of the medical implants CMF business was driven by all core product segments after the continued investment in a CMF global sales organization, Synthes said.
