BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - Full-scale commercial production at the Changan Ford Mazda Engine Co, a joint venture between Mazda, Ford and a Chinese partner, will begin soon, said Mei-Wei Cheng, vice president of Ford Motor Co and chairman and CEO of Ford Motor China.

'The official start of volume production at the Changan Ford Mazda Engine Co will come very soon, and vehicle production at the new Nanjing facility -- Changan Ford Mazda Auto Co -- will begin before the end of the year,' he said.

Cheng said the all new third generation Ford Mondeo will be produced at Changan Ford Mazda Auto Co in 2008, and Mazda will produce an all-new Mazda 2 for the Chinese market at its Nanjing plant.

'Ford Motor Company and affiliated brands' 2007 production capacity in mainland China will reach 546,000 units per year,' Cheng said.

Ford and affiliated brands sold 167,000 units last year in mainland China, an 86 pct increase from 2005, and the company said it has already sold 43,000 units in mainland China in the first quarter.

'Our momentum is increasing,' Cheng said.

He added that Changan Ford Mazda Auto Co Ltd's share of the annual production capacity will be 410,000 units, up from 250,000 units last year.

'In addition, Ford Motor Research and Engineering (Nanjing) Co Ltd received government approval in March to begin operations,' he said, without elaborating.
