ATLANTA (AFX) - CheckFree Corp., a provider of electronic bill payment services, said Tuesday fiscal second-quarter profit rose nearly 5 percent, helped by bank-based transactions.Quarterly earnings totaled $35.3 million, or 39 cents per share, up from $33.7 million, or 36 cents per share, during the year-ago period. Excluding the amortization of acquisition-related intangible assets and a stock-option expense, earnings were 44 cents per share.Analysts polled by Thomson Financial predicted profit of 42 cents per share.Revenue grew 11 percent to $237.2 million, from $213.8 million last year.Analysts were looking for revenue of $232.9 million.The company said bank-based transactions during the quarter were 'solid,' but non-bank transactions fell bellow company expectations.Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
