ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York business executive was appointed Tuesday as the president and chief executive officer of the New York Power Authority, which runs the Niagara Falls electric generating station and 17 other power plants in the state.Roger Kelley, an electrical engineer with more than 30 years experience in the electric utility industry, has been a senior vice president of Fortistar and is a former chairman of the Independent Power Producers of New York. Fortistar is a privately owned power generating company with interests in New York, California and several other states.Timothy Carey, a longtime ally of former Gov. George Pataki, announced last week that he was stepping down as president and CEO.Kelley's appointment by the authority's board of trustees had been recommended by Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Fortistar has been a financial backer of the new governor, donating at least $2,000 to his campaign committee in the past two years, according to state records.As head of the authority's management team, Kelley will be paid $235,000 a year. Carey made $227,501 a year in the post.The power authority is the nation's largest state-owned electric utility, with 18 power plants and 1,400 miles of transmission lines.Copyright 2007 Associated Press.
